SHIRE COUNCIL
— —o
Damage To Fencing
The president of Goodradigbee
Shire Council, Cr. H. J. Best, presided
at the monthly meeting held in
the Council Chambers, Rossi Street,
on Friday. Others present were:
Crs. G. W. Merriman, C. A. Grogan,
C. M. E. Vallance, S. H. Walker and
R. Julian. Officials present were:
Messrs. T. G. Wenham, clerk; L. E.
Cowles, engineer, and B. 0. Buckmaster,
noxious weeds inspector.
It was stated that advice had been
received that morning of a case of
diphtheria from Binalong. The engineer
said the necessary notice
would be served and the house of the
patient disinfected.
In connection with F. C. Hall's
road resumption in the parish of Murrumbateman,
Messrs. Phillips and Co.,
solicitors, stated among other things
in a letter: "To avoid the unnecessary
expense and trouble of litigation
we would be glad if the council
would consider making our client an
ex gratia payment of £10 as compensation
for damage to his fencing on
the consideration that he should release
the council from all further
claims in respect to such fencing, and
agree to remove the fencing from *he
new road as soon as possible."
Other People's Benefit
The president said the applicant
was a small man who had been put
io expense for other people's benefit,
He thought it would be a good move
on the council's part to grant him
£10, apart from the legality of the
position. If it was freehold land he
thought the applicant would have a
first-class claim against them. He
thought it would be good grace on
the council's part to meet him to that
extent.
Cr. Vallance took the same view.
Cr. Merriman said he recognised
the applicant had been put to expense
and trouble and he was a man
who could not afford it. He thought
they should pay him fair compensation,
whatever that was.
After further discussion it was decided
to pay £10 compensation and
to grant the applicant permission to
erect a gate at the fee o£ £1/1/.
W. II. Gribble, Ginninderra, stat-,
ed among other things in a letter
that he had a traction engine which
weighed half a ton heavier than the
maximum load allowed under the
Local Government Act. He asked I
council to withhold any objection to
him travelling in Goodradigbee Shire.
—Council decided to raise no objection.
Can't Burn Off Till April
V. J. McKinnon applied for permission
to burn off timber on country
adjoining W. T. Merriman on the
Murrumbidgee. He realised, he stated,
that legally one could not burn
off till April 1.—Applicant to be informed
council cannot approve of
burning off till April.
The president, Cr. Best, was appointed
to attend the annual conference
in June.
G. M. E. Vallance, "Hillview,"
Murrumbateman, brought under notice
of the council the possible danger
of erosion of the road from Murrumbateman
to Nanima Creek, which,
he stated, was undermining his fence.
He asked would the council take preventative
steps.—Agreed to allow Cr.
Vallance to fence the portion into
his property.
Cr. Vallance, who did not vote on
the matter, said he would do the
fencing at his own expense.
