DECEMBER COLLECTIONS
£59,000 RECEIVED.
CANBERRA, January 2.
The first returns which have been
received bv the Tederal Ireasuiy of the
operation of the sales ta\ on Hour show
that £ ou 000 was collected between Do
cember 4 when the tn\ was imposed
and Decembei 29 This amount repre-
sents only the tax i ion stocks of floui
which weie held on December 4 bj
bakers and othei tiseis but not millers
and Is not a good Indication of the
amount the sales ta\ might ho expected
to vield each month A better Indica
tlon will be available on Tanuary 21
when the millers will make theil first
pajment of tho 11\ upon their actual
sales since December 4
Towards the end of December the
payments of tho ta\ on stocks steadily
increased and on Decembei -8 approx-
imately £19 000 was collected There
turn for last Saturday has not yet been
received but lieaiury officials said th it
