NATIVE AFFAIRS
Court Defends Their
Rights
PROTECTION AGAINST
IGNORANCE
"ALICE SPRINGS, Friday.
'when. an aborigine appeared
before Judge Wells at Alice
Springs yesterday, the Deputy
Chief Protector entered a plea
of guilty on his behalf, where-
upon the Judge objected, remarking
that he never liked to
accept pleas of guilty from
aborigines, particularly when
the charges were serious.
The plea was then altered to one
of not guilty.
His Honour said that aborigines
did not always know what was being
done, and were entitled to a trial
by a court and not by a Chief Protector.
