Geelong and Footscray played the first
icml-finnl of the League Second Eighteen1!
as a curtain raiser to the League semi-final
at the M.C.G. today.
Weak forward piny deprived Footscray
of a big lead In the first term. .
Favored by a strong cross wind, they
were nearly always in attach, but there
was no cohesion among the forwards, and
little effort was made to . open up the
play. Footscray 's only goal for the quarter
came from a long shot by Mitchell, the
bail bouncing through an unguarded- -goal.
Geelong introduced more system into
their piny and kicked to position with
sound judgment. They were in defence
for most of the quarter, however, and their
backs, particularly Taylor, did exception
ally well to keep Footscray down to 8
points.
There was not one good kick throughout
the quarter, and it seemed that the ball
rather than the players was at fault.
QUARTER-TIME
FOOTSCRAY— I GI. 2 Bhds.— 8 Pts.
GEELONG.— Nil.
For the first tori minutes of the second
quarter Geelong were held up by the high
marking of Footscray's big men. but they
broke through with a pretty flonk move
ment for their first goal by Tucker.
1 Kelly led Footscray to a counter attack,
and Thorns received a neat pass in front
to register the Tricolor's second goat.
Play became fiery, and with weight being
solidly applied, Geelong were not nearly
as impressive as In the first quarter. .
Footscray were driving forward In vigor
ous style and their straight ahead tactics
were rewarded with two goals by White.
Geelong ' sandwiched or.e In between, but
It was only on rare occasions that the ball
reached their forward line.
HALF TIME
FOOTSCRAY.— 4 Gls. 5 Bhds.— 29 Pts.
GEF.LONG— 2 Gls. 5 Bhds— 17 Pts.
Faci.it, a deficit. Geelong made a sptrlted
opening to the second half. Temporarily
supreme across the centre, they kept the
ball in attack, but innccurate forward work,
brought several behlnds from excellent
chances.
Flashing out from the pivot. Kelly at last
forced Footscray forward for two goals.
A Geelong counter saw clever ground
work by Pender bring their first goal for
Uie term.
Winning In the air and with improved
ruck work,- Footscray were now definitely
the better side. In play which was grow
ing more rugged. Geelong were forced Into
errors, missing even the easiest of de
liberate shot&.
Towards the end of the quarter, Foots
cray scored easily.

Geelong fought hard In die last term,
but the issue of the game was nevef m
doubt. Footscray deserved their - win.
Scarcely pressed In the last term, they
Hashed out tn delightful interludes of sys-
lemoiic pluy' to add several scores. A
feature of the game was the number - of

In the centre.
