PERSONAL.
The Colonial Secretary (Mr. W. Kings.
mill) returned to the city yesterday from
Mandurah, where he spent a brief holi:
day. The Minister states that he had
some excellent sport fishing.
Mr. W. E. boxon, local agent for the
Adelaide Steamship Company, leaves for
Cue to-day, :n order to attend the Arbi
tration Court sittings. His place will
be taken during his absence by Mr.
Downer, from the Company's Albany of
fice.
- The Premier of South Australia (Mr.
J. G. Jenkins) finds it impossible to get
away from Adelaide in time to catch the
mail steamer for Western Australia, 'on
Thursday next. He will leave for Fre
mantle by the German mail steamer,
Grosser Kurfurst, on Saturday next. He
will be accompanied by. Mr. Gardiner, the
Colonial Treasurer of Western Australia.
Captain E. E. Lavington, of the Orient
Pacific Company's service, who has been
on leave, was a through passenger to
London by the H.M.S. Oruba, which left
Fremantle last night.
Professor Nicholas, of the Burbank's
Birthday Gift gold mine; Mr. E. Gra
ham Price, of the Coolgardie WaterSup
ply Company; and Mr. Lovell, manager
of the Donegal mine, at Lawlers, return
ed from the Eastern States by the R.M.S,
Oruba yesterday.
At last night's meeting of the
Claremont Municipal Council, the Mayor
(Mr. S. Stubbs), on behalf of himself and
the councillors, presented the Town Clerk
(Mr. W. S. Brockway) with a handsome
piece of plate and a set of carvers. In
making the presentation Mr. Stubbs
conveyed to the Town Clerk the Council's
appreciation of his work, especially in
connection with' the social functions ap
pertaining to' the civic life of the muni
cipality. Mr. Brockway expressed his
thanks for the handsome present and for
the kind expressions of the Mayor and
councillors.
A Sydney telegram states that Mr.
James Milson, aged 88, the oldest yachts
man of Sydney, has died at his residence,
North Sydney.
A cable message was received in Syd
ney yesterday notifying the death at
Foochow, China, of Mr. E. A. Whitle,
Commercial Agent for New South Wales
in the East. The cause of death was
small-pox.
The. Federal Commandant, Major
General Hutton, will leave Melbourne
by thse R.M.S. Britaninia to-day, on a
tour of inspection of Western Australia
He will be accompanied by Major Dan
gar, A.D.C.
