Compulsory Conference
Ordered in Q.
BRISBANE, Wednesday.
Following the application on behalf
of 53 colliery proprietors both
State of "Queensland the Industrial
Court today ordered a compulsory
conference between representatives
of the Queensland proprietors and
the Queensland colliery employees'
union next Monday.
It is reported that about 1,500
sawmill employees will be dismissed .
this month as a result of the coal
strike, and at least 2,500 men in other
occupations will be temporarily
unemployed.

No estimate has been prepared by
the Australian Government of the
cost of emergency defence precautions
taken during the world crisis
last week, said the Minister for Defence
(Mr. Thorby), in the House
of Representatives yesterday, reply-
ing to Mr. Spender (Ind. U.A.P.),
who drew attention to the fact that
precautions taken in England cost
£44,000,000.
"It is impossible to state how
much was spent," said the Minister,
but advantage was taken when reserves
were called up to enter upon-,
