A SUNKEN STEAMER.
The Utopia Recovered.
LONDON, July 8.
The efforts to raise the steamer Utopia,
which sank in the Bay of Gibraltar on
the night of March 16 in consequence of
a collision with H.M.S. Rodney, have
been successful and she is now afloat
again.
The Utopia is an iron screw steamer of
1,754 tons register, with engines of 678
h.p., -while her length is 350 ft., her
breadth 35 ft., her depth 2« ft., and she
was built at Port Glasgow in 1874. She was
entering Gibraltar liay during a heavy
gale, and in attempting to clear H.M.S.
Anson, the flagship of the Mediterranean
squadron, she ran into the lt<>dney,
ranking immediately. She carried
880 Italian immigrant* for the
Argentine Republic, and most of
these were ltatteiied down l>eo:iuse
of the rough weather, so that i<7o per
sons were drowned, including several
BritLsli sailors who attempted to effect a
rescue. Captain Morrison, of the Utopia,
was arrested on a charge of manslaughter,
but was acquitted.
