REPORT BY MR. DARTNALL.
THE LINES UNAFFECTED BY RAIN.
The Chief Engineer of Existing Lines,
Mr. W. W. Dartnall, furnished us yes
terday afternoon with the following in
formation relating to the Railway
strike :--'"The decision of the Govern
ment has had a very marked effaat in
inducing the permanent way men to re
turn to their work. The reports to hand
from, the various districts are most en
couraging, ,and, there is every prospect
of the Department overcoming the diffi
culties which it has had to face. In the
Eastern. district four complete and six
incomplete gangs' have resumed 'work
during the last 24 hours, and in the South
Western district five complete and ten
incomplete gangs. (A gang is comprised
of a ganger and three men, or gaunger and
four and sometimes five men.) In the
Great Southern District the men are
rapidly resuming duty, and it is expected
that all of. the gangs between Beverley
and` Wagin will have returned to work
by to-morrow morning. The suburban
-line, between Perth and Fremntle, .is
now. being spee'allyinspected and over
hauled by a volunteer gang of -- officials,
in charge of the ipspector for the section.
"Many applications for employment.in
various capacities have been received to
day, and a Zumber of tradesmen, and
labourers have been engaged. ' It has
come to my knowledge that in-one of the
districts the repairers have been shown
misleading telegrams from the Associa
tion executive; and also that ..certain
foremen on strike have been endeavour
ing to intimidate them. Many of the
-men who have not resumed duty are ten
anting departmental houses, and early
notices to quit will be served on them. '.
'"The lines throughout are in fair or
der, aind have not been prejudicially af
fected by the rains. Every possible pre
caution;is being taken to ensure the saf
ety of the traffic."
