Unions Call General
Stoppage In S.A.
ADELAIDE. — A general stoppage of all indus
tries in South Australia will take place on
Monday.
Tills Is the effect of a resolution
adopted by representatives of all
Important South Australian unions
at the Trades Hall today.
The stoppage will directly Involve
more than 100,000 unionists and in
directly many thousands more.
The stoppage was recommended
by union representatives at today's
enlarged disputes committee meet
ing to support the striking tram
way men. The resolution read: —
"That there be a complete
stoppage of workers In all in
dustries ng defined by the dis
putes- committee, from midnight
on Sunday to midnight on Mon
day in support of a reasonable
settlement of the tramwaymen's
demands."
An amendment that the stop
page begin on Thursday and con
tinue for an. Indefinite period was
withdrawn.
FOOD EXEMPT
Union officials said after the.
meeting that they thought ar
rangements would be made for
the delivery of foodstuffs. This
was a matter which would have
to be discussed later.
Hospitals, welfare Institutions,
and fire brigades were also to be
exempt from the stoppage.
All unions affiliated with the
Trades and Labor Council, to
gether with the Australian Work
ers' Union, were represented at
the enlarged disputes committee
meeting.
It ls understood the resolution
was adopted unanimously.
All unionists in the State are
united as never before in an effort
to see the tramwaymen obtain a
satisfactory settlement.
Today was the 14th day of the
tramwaymen's strike. No strike pay
has yet been paid to the men.
PEACE HOPE
This morning's compulsory con
ference between the Tramway Em
ployees' Union and the Tramways
Trust adjourned until 3 p.m. on
the application of the Union's
' Federal Secretary, Mr Broadby,
who said he wished time to confer
with colleagues.
In reply to Judge Drake Brock-
man, Mr Broadby said he thought
this might contribute towards a
settlement and peace.
