TRIBUTES TO ABILITY
SYDNEY, Wednesday. — There was an
impressive scene in the Banco Court to
day when the retiring Chief Justice (Sir
Philip Street) was farcwcllcd by both
Drancnes oi tne legal proiession. ne win
sail, with Lady Street, on Friday next
for England and Europe.
The court was crowded with judges,
barristers and solicitors, and scats were
improvised for the District Court judges,
former judges, and Sir George Rich and
Mr Justice McTiernnn. of the High Court.
Because of the indisposition of the
senior puisne judge (Sir John Harvey).
Mr Justice James presided, and with him
on the Bench were Sir Philip Street and
Justices Long Inncs. Davidson, Halse,
Rogers, Milner, Stephen, K. W. Street
(son of the Chief Justice), and Boyce.
King's Counsel present were headed by
Mr Manning (State Attorney-General)
and Mr Weigall (Solicitor-General). Lady
Street and the wives of judges and dis
tinguished officials attended. Prominent
Supreme Court and District Court offi
cials were also in court.
EIGHTH YEAR OF OFFICE
Sir Philip Street, who will be 70 years
of age on August 0, does not officially
retire until that date, when he will have
completed his eighth year of office as
Chief Justice and his 2Gth as a Supreme
Court Judge.
Tributes were paid to the ability and
work of Sir Philip Street, who, in re
sponse, said that he regarded the attend
ance as an expression of their belief
that he had tried to do his duty as a
judge and as Chief Justice.
