Bread Shortage
Faces Sydney ;
SYDNEY, Tuesday. — Unless,
the Government allowed bakers,
with gas ovens lo use the supply
there would he a shortage of
bread for the week-end. the sec
retary of the Bread Manufac-
turers' Association (Mr H. W.
Relf) warned today.
Tt. would be very difficult for
hakeries using fuels other than
gas to provide for the week-end
needs of Sydney housewives and
at the same time supply the. de
mands of the customers of those
bakeries which had been forced
to close because of the gas strike.
With the standing down of more
than 1000 members of the Pastry
cook and Biscuit Makers' Union
the industry had been hard hit,
at what wns usually one of the
busiest times of the year, he
added.
Christmas cakes and puddings
would soon be unprocurable.
