CANBERRA. — Appointment of

Charles Crutchley, V.C., D.S.O., as
Rear-Admiral Commanding the
Australian Naval Squadran. was
announced today by the Common
wealth Government.
The appointment dates from
June 13.
Rear-Admiral Crutchley suc
ceeds Rear-Admiral J. G. Crace.
who has been commanding the
Royal Australian Naval Squadron
since 1939.
Rear-Admiral Crutchley is re
garded as one of the most dis
tinguished of the younger genera
tion of British admirals. He is
only 49.
He has commanded the battle
ship H.M.S. Warspite since 1937
and won the Victoria Cross in
May. 1918, while serving on H.M.S.
Vindictive, in an attempt to block
Ostend harbor. For this daring
exploit he was also awarded the
Croix de Guerre.
' After commanding H.M.S. Dio-
mede in New Zealand waters.
Rear-Admiral Crutchley became
senior officer of the first mine-
sweeping flotilla in 1935. In 1936
he was appointed captain of ihe
Fishery Protection and Mine
sweeping Flotilla.
