KING CAROL'S DESPERATE BID
THRONE THREATENED BY POLITICS
MINORITY FASCIST FORMS CABINET
BUCHAREST, Wednesday.
Faced on the one hand with the fear of losing his throne, and
on the other with the threat of losing his red-haired mistress,
Madame Lupescu, King Carol of Rumania made his most perilous
gamble when he called on M. Goga to form a Cabinet.
M. Goga Cabinet has taken, the oath of office, but the political
situation remains chaotic as the Cabinet has practically no Parliamentary
support.
The new Cabinet consists of eight members of the National
Party, three of the National Peasant Party, and three belonging to
no party.
Opinion in Vienna is that the new Rumanian Government is
so balanced that there will be no attempt to carry out a violent
anti-semitic or extremist foreign policy.
King Carol's alternatives were to
commission M Maniu, leader of the
Peasant Party, whom he hates and
fears, of one of the leaders of the
Fascist "-groups the largest of which
is the "All for the Fatherland" party,
formerly the Iron Guards, whose
battle cry is "Fight against the Jews,
especially Lupescu "
So King Carol turned to the
smaller Fascist group led by M
Goga
It was Maniu who sent King Carol
to exile and the King fears that he
may some day exile him again.
