Fitzroy
ipITZROY had a successful practice match
between teams captained by Bunton
and Nichols. Despite tho hard ground,
i there were flashes of good football. Sur
prisingly good form was shown by rc-
I cruits.
; Barker, from Woodcnd. showed pace, and
; always placed the ball with certainty,
j James (Sunshine),, a first class ccntreman,
l was versatile.
| PrVcc (Abbotsford) was a cool and clever
i rover. Butler, a forward from Port Mel
bourne. scored goals from all angles.
I Of Inst season's players. . Ilaydyn Bunton
'was in fine form. . Ledwidge has, de
veloped.
Nichols was as elusive ns ever, and very
aocura'tc in the air.
The enthusiasm nnd ability dlrplaycd in
the game Epcaks well for the coming sea
son. The selectors have secured men cap
able of filling the weak places, nnd with
Gordon Rattray In charge thev are confi
dent of moving up the ladder '.ills year.
Melbourne
'PWO teams, embodying the more promU-
L ing of Melbourne's numerous recruits,
staged a practice game on the Old Scotch
ground. Although the conditions were
trying players showed the benefit of last
week's match nnd staged a fast and sys
tematic game.
Easily the most outstanding of thc re
cruits was Russell, n half-back from Kil-
morc. Opposed to L. Jones, Russell was
well tried nnd he impressed as a dashing
and reliable defender. Park, a full-back
from Marysvillc, and a good kick, was also
i in Die limelight.
Prominent In Melbourne's practice game
were several of last yenr's second eighteen.
Gordon Jones, who was tried out last year
with the firsts but failed to hold his place,
handled the ball more than anyone on thc
field. His ruck work was good, and with
his rugged dash and clever turns he should
be a likely contender for a permanent place
as follower this year. McNnughton nnd
Wilcox, also from the Seconds, were both
effective back men.
Moved into the centre In the second half
to oppose La Fontaine. Truskett did well
to hold Melbourne's champion.
Melbourne should reap the full benefit
of a hard and fast try out.
; Lcdgwldge (Wagga) broke his nose dur
ing tho first quarter.
Carlton
DEFORE the start of the games at Princes
- Oval, Mr D. H. Crone, the president,
formally welcomed Percy Rowe as coach
for the ensuing season. Juniors were tried
out in the 1.30 game. Arrell, Smlhdt. Par
ker, B. Green. G. Butler, O'Neill, Dempsey,
McGulnness, Ellard and Taylor were con
spicuous.
Most of the regulars and those who are
thought likely to be brought Into the 1937
side— captained by Francis and Kuhlken —
composed the cignteens in the major game
at 3 p.m.
Crisp, who has not ployed since last
August on account of injury, was conspicu
ous on the half-forward line.
Opposed to R. Green on the centre wing
Askew, from Benailn. wax closely watched.
Honors were even In the first term.
Although on the heavy side, Wrout
acttve forward, and obtained two early
goals. The sides were evenly matched and
etcrmlned play was the outcome.
The short passing of Shields (Training
College) was outstanding.
Clarke showed form equal to that which
made him the best ana fairest for 1936.
Francis, Huxtable and Davey combined
cleverly. i
Most of the old players did well. - Kuhk-
len Improved on last season's performances.
So did Boschen 'ln the last half.
McGuinncs. an almost unknown player,
gave a dashing exhibition forward. Car
ney is already in splendid trim.
ft was an afternoon of sound football,
and Carlton selectors have a difficult task
ahead.
Footscray
R. PORTER was the' outstanding recruit
In Footscray's practice match today.
He la a full forward from the Seconds,
and today proved too good. for Bennett,
Footscray s regular full back. He Is a
sure marls, ana a good kick, nnd he' anti
cipates cleverly. >- He kicked several goals
in the first half of the match,-, and seems
almost certain to be Included In the Foots
cray side.
The rugby players. Bridle and Roberts,
were always under notice. Of the two,
Roberts was the better. He defended bril
liantly, and Is a tear-through type of
player. Bridle did well lna the ruck, and
in the air used his height to advantage. A
few more practice matches, and these men
should develop . Into first-class Australian
rules players,'
Other new men who stood out were: —
Joe Ryan (Seconds), forward pocket and
roving; Gray (local juniors),- a clever
centre player: Hobbs .(local junior), fast
wing man; Zimmerman (local junior) did
well In the ruck.
The best of .the old players were O'Brien.
Dick Easori sntTJ.' Ryan. ' r ; .
Richmond Recruits
With the seniors and leading recruits
engaged at Sandrlngham,.- Richmond's re
maining recruits were, tried out at Olympic
Park. The most, impressive were Stephen
son. follower, from- Pok'enham: O'CpnnelL
half-forward, from the local Juniors;- an
Rostis, also a local), who played well In
the centre. - .......
