free kick kept Geelong in attack. Muller
whipped In to help against the sturdy de
fence of Gordon Jones and his neat pass
was taken by Metherell for an easy goal.
Geelong now appeared to have a firm
grip on the match. They were 20 points
m front and playing as though they were
a winning team. Their defenders stood up
to a solid barrage in fine style, their anli-
.n being almost uncanny.
Hscher put all he knew Into the game,
but Geelong struck back time .ifter time.
Murnane and Penberthy, however, wore
prominent in keeping down the scoring
rate, and when La Fontaine jumped into
the play Melbourne quickly added a single.
. their first score for the quarter.
Fighting desperately Geelong rendered
Ineffective another Melbourne drive, and
with a good exhibition of passing they
were back on the Melbourne defence line,
where Metherell was unlucky when a snap
shot trickled through tho behind posts.
Kinncar's poor kick In was taken by
Quinn. but he found the distance too far.
and Ogden was able to clear.
Melbojtrne's desertion of position made it
easy for Geelong to begin another attack
straight down the centre, and Abbott, too
good for Murnane. nicked out Les. Hardl
mnn. His shot brought Geelong's seventh
behind.
Geelong had Melbourne worried in speed,
and they knew too much about scouting
when Melbourne made one of their infre

. and one of his relieving kicks directly led
, to another single.
. At this stage Melbourne brought Mueller
back into defence, and Murnane took over
the forward pocket. While the change was
taking place, Geelong's ninth behind went
up. and even when the players had settled
, down Into their positions it had no effect
on Geelong. They continued to attack
strongly, and but for Penberthy and Lewis,
must have scored.
Melbourno used Buckley's wing In clear
ing the danger zone, but Hickey was keep
ing a close watch on Smith, and Geelong
; were able to stall off the drive. A free
kick to Murnane. however, sent Melbourne
back again, and when Beanies was bowled
1 heavily, ho easily posted Melbourne's tenth
goal from a free.
' Playing In the ruck with Lewis. Mueller
sent Melbourne forward from the bounce,
but Murnane lost a golden opportunity
' when he scored only a behind from a free
25 yards out.
Long was very useful In the Melbourne
defence, when Geelong sought to recover
the advantage, and he had another solid
worker In Ogden, who was nullifying Gee
long's efforts to make chances for Methe
rell.
Dougherty was cheered to the echo for a
brilliant mark over Mueller, but the latter
turned the tables at the next effort, and
heloed Murnane to another point.
The standard of play to this stage was
very poor, and Melbourne threw away a
chance which followed two brilliant marks
by Ln Fontaine and Baggott. They were
not helping their cause by throwing their
weight about, as the umpire was quick to
notice breaches and only a change In tac
tics enabled them to pierce the defence for
I another single to Murnane. They were still
jon tlie forward line when the quarter ended.

Hopes Rise And Fall
Before tlie last quarter began Truscott
replaced Reiffel, who had received a nose
injury in the third team.
As thougli to ram nomc the fact that
they were the superior side, Geelong
swept downfleld at great pace from the
bounce, and in spite of good defence by
Ogden, they quickly rattled on their
fourteenth goal. It was scored by Quinn,
who had played a brilliant game all day.
They were attacking again when Pen
berthy stood in ther way, but Melbourne's
attempts to assume Uie offensive were
frustrated by Selwood.
Murnane marked well, but kicked badly,
and Arklay was able to relieve easily.
Lock, however, swung play back, and Trus
cott made a brilliant debut by completely

It seemed as thougli Melbourne's task
was now hopeless, but they ran Into the
fame with a new determination and La
ontainc. who had loft Uie centre in favor
of Truscott, played a captain's part by in
spiring play. He was tn everything, and
made position to receive a pass from Trus
cott, and posted twelfth goal. He followed
It with a behind, and then combined with
Les Jones and Baggott for another goal.
Geelong's lead was now 14 points, ana
there were virions of . another lightning
finish similar to that with which they beat
Collingwood a few weeks ago.
Melbourne's hopes of victory rose with
the score, but almost Immediately Geelong
struck back from the centre for two quick
goals. They were scored by Metherell and
Dougherty, and put Geelong 26 points tn
front.
Geelong now settled down to an exhibi
tion of brilliant open system. They out
paced Melbourne, made position better, and
took the ball to tho goal mouth.
SELLWOOD'S CLEARING RUN
Slack dashed their hopes again when he
converted an attempt to attack down his
wing, and SeUwood came to light with a
good clearing run to spoil another on
slaught.
Qulnn was malting towards goal when a
free was given against him. but Melbourne
found it hard to get past Arklay. Grant
and Coles. A pass from Coles to Quinn
took Geelong right down the field. Grant
and Evans combining well to find Metherell
Retherell's goal seemed to make Gee
long's position unassailable, but Melbourne
were finishing brilliantly Tlie Redlegs were
making a determined effort to pull the
game out of the fire, but the task was
proving extremely difficult. 'Grant and
Hore were equal to almost everything, and
they were responsible for Geelong's next
' -score — a single to Hardlman.
Les. Jones, running loose on the Mel
bourne back line, spoilt a shot by Quinn,
and a series of passes between Mueller,
Truscott and Smith brought Melbourne's
fourteenth goal. Geelong, however, were
lenvng nothing to chance. They, set about
Increasing their lead with a display of fine
systematic moves and reward come with,
goals to Hardlman and Glenlstec.
Geelong had the match weQ won. and
they were now doing almost as they liked.
At this stage Hore, who appeared to be
suffering from a rib Injury, was replaced
by Mahon.
1 Melbourne continued to attack. In spite
of a defence that showed no sign of slack
ening. Baggott scored their fifteenth goal,
but a chance for another vjqb spoilt when
Scllwood was bowled over.
- Handball between Fischer and Lewis put
, Melbourne Into attack again, but it was
easily broken up by the perfect understand
ing and anticipation of the Geelong back
line. Only two singles were scored after
five minutes hard battling.
Melbourne maintained their dying effort
for another point and a goal to make Gec
long's lead only 12 points shortly before
the belt.
