Marathon
"Ready, gel set, go" — and
hundreds of slender needles
wielded by more than 200 of the
city's best adult and juvenile
knitters Hashed into action in the
State's first all-day knitting mara
thon at the Town Hall today.
The number of knitters increased
as the day went on, and by late after
noon hundreds- of women were busy
in the hail with their needles.
At 4 p.m. the only completed gar
ments were socks — six of them — but
there were hundreds ot other articles
well on the way to be completed for
the National Council of Women's
branch of the Comforts Fund .which,
with 3DB, organised the competition.
-He
WITH elbows close to their Sides,
and in complete silence, each
disregarded her neighbor as she
added stitch after stitch. In less
than half an hour the leaders had
completed the 4' -i -inch ribbed top of
one plain one purl and were increas
ing their pace on the plain 12 inch leg.
Most used the composition needles
provided, but some, regardless of the
feminine claim that they are a con
tributory cause of rheumatism, insist
ed on using their own heavier steel
needles.
?
ON the other side of the hall, less
expert because they were less
experienced, were the juvenile
knitters, and among them the most
unconcerned of all the competitors —
nine-year-old John Clayton, of Caul-
field, the onlv male knitter
He proved his worth by completing
seven Inches of scurf by 12.3U and car
rying off the special prize for tlie men's
section— a handsome box of chocolates.
Adult competitors had a breather at
this stage, and the youngsters, not
fitted for a gruelling test over a long
distance, ended their morning session.
