LIGHT POLE
Youfii In Car Killed
FATAL RETURN FROM PARTY
At the City Morgue today the
Coroner (Mr D. Grant, P.M.)
held an inquest into the circum
stances of the death of Philip

Cnulilcld, who died on April 11 as a
result of Injuries received to his head
while leaning out of a car which
struck an electric light pole.
Iris Victoria Hill, Chnrnlcy Street,
East Prnhrnn, said that on the night
of April 10 sho gave a party at her
parents' house. Dane was a guest.
Among the refreshments supplied by
Iter were six bottlca of beer, a small
bottle of gin, a half bottle of whisky,
and a quantity of soft drinks, Dur
ing the night Dane had some beer,
but on leaving nt 1.4 5 a.m. ho was
quite sober. He left with several
others In a car driven by a guest of
hers named Rao.
Joseph Penno, Payne Streot, Allddle
Park, said he was a member of the
party In the car In which Dane was
being driven home. After dropping
two girls at their homes In Barclay
Street, tho car proceeded in a west
erly direction along Dandenong Road.
He got out near St. Kilda station.
Dane complained that he was not
feeling well, and opened tho left-hand
side curtain.
Alan Gore Brett, salesman, Burke
Road, East Malvern, said that on
dropping Penno ho had climbed Into
tho front seat, leaving Dane alone In
the back. In Balaclava Road, past
tho railway station, tho car swerved
from the centre of the road and
struck an electric light post. He
heard the scrape nnd drew Rae's at
tention to the fact. When the - car
pulled up Dano wns hanging over the
left-hand door, his arms hanging
down. Ho was unconscious, and the
right sldo of his head was bleeding.
After attempting to stop the bleed
ing he was driven to tho Alfred Hos
pital.
MOTORISTS NOT DRUNK
William John Myers, dresser at tho
Alfred Hospital, said tho driver told
him that Dane' had fallen out of the
car while travelling along Dandenong
Road. Although ho could smell a
slight odor of liquor, tho men were
not drunk. '
Constable John Oatcs said he Went
to tho house where tho party had
been held, and found 12 empty beer
bottles, one bottlo of gin, and one
empty whisky bottle. There wero
some empty cordial bottles also. Rae
and Brett were both quite sober.
Edward Halo Rae, 20, clerk, ' of
Manning Road, Easjt Malvern, driver
of the car, was committed for trial.
Ball was fixed at £150, with a Burety
of a like amount.
