ALLEGED BANK BANDITS
ON TRIAL
Sydney Hold-Up Evidence
SYDNEY. Wednesday. — A a a sequel
to a hold-up at the Woollahra branch
of tho Government Savings Bank, on
September 5. when the teller. Thomas
Louis Holesgrovc. was shot in the
thigh, four men appeared at the Cen
tral Criminal Court today on u charge
of assault with Intent to rob In com
pany while armed.
They were also charged with hav
ing wounded Holesgrovc. 1
The accused men are: Thomas
Kelly, 39, physical instructor; Charles
Passmorc, 57, agent; Joseph Wil
liams, 29, showman; and William Poe,
24. printer. They challenged 32
jurors, an extra panel having been
provided.
Kelly wns discharged by direction
of the judge. The hearing of tho
charge against tho others was ad
journed.
The Crown Prosecutor said that the
issue was a very simple one, being
one of Identification.
As regards Williams, the evidence
was purely circumstantial.
The Crown alleged, lie said, that a
car wae driven to a side street, near
the bank, about 1 p.m. on September
5, and that Kelly, Williams and Poc
got out. Passmore remaining in the
car. The men who entered the bank
were masked, and neither, the mana
ger. nor the teller was able to iden
tify them.
The Crown further alleged that the
car seen near the bank bore the num
ber of Williams's car.
In his evidence Holcsgrove said
that a man who had a revolver In his
hand said, "Come on," and fired as
he (Holesgrovc) reached for his re
volver. He had since heard the voice
of tho man who said, "Come on." It
was that of Poe.
Norman Clive Everett, the bank
manager, said the man who fired at
Holesgrove also fired at him (Everett)
and his arm was bruised where the
bullet grazed it.
Everett said he saw three men in
the bank. All were masked he had
not identified any of the men, but the
man who spoke In tho bank had a
voice something like Poe's, though
he would not sweur to it.
