Kicking In
VFA Packs
Takes Toll
By LAURIE POWER
The heavy toll of in
juries incurred during last '
Saturday's YFA matches
showed, that most Associa-
tion teams will be weak
ened during the season
unless players adapt them
selves to more skilful use',
of the ANFC rule that
permits kicking the bail
out of packs although a
player ' might have, his
hands near or on the ball.
Under the old VFA code the
umpire would award a. free
kick against the "kicker."
The ANFC rule, although un
popular. Is accepted and play
ers have no alternative but to
"use ' the' boot" whenever the
occasion a Uses.
It now remains to be seen
whether players use this me
thod of disposal scientifically
and to best advantage. Failure
to do so will find a steady
stream of players leaving the
field to nurse unnecessary In
juries
LIGHT TRAINING
Because of tne holiday today
several clubs practised last
nivht. However, light training
will be conducted at. Bruns
wick, Coburg, Port. Melbourne,
and Preston tonight.
Northcote will train tomor
row and Thursday. Teams for
Saturday will be selected after
practice on Thursday.
Henrys. Brunswick half
back flanker, is suffering torn
ligaments to the leg and is
very doubtful for Saturday's
game against Prahran.
Whelan, star ruckman, and
Maher, half-forward flank, who
received a split chiri and thigh
injury respectively at Williams-
town, are reported to be fit.
Ron ' Irwin, Yarraville cap
tain-coach, will concentrate ' on
hard match practice on Thurs
day night to rectify weaknesses
displayed against Prahran, par
ticularly in the last Quarter.
HARD GAME
Possible exclusion; through
injury, of Bernard (ruck) and
Park (half-back flank) . would
be a serious blow to this team,
which impressed last Saturday,
but lacked stamina at the fin-
ish.
Preston will have an uphill
hpttlf, BtrnlnRt. Williamstown on
Saturday. They went down
easily to Oakleigh in the open
ing match, but this was due
mainly to the backs' inability
to cope with a powerful attack.
