Question In
House On
Union Ban
CANBERRA, Thursday.—
No Government with a shred
of Belf-respcct could tolerate
a ban such as that reported
to have been placed by the
Seamen's union on Austral
ian vessels carrying U.S.
Government officials or
freight, the Minister for
Labor and National Service
(Mr Holt) ' said today.
Mr Holt was replying In the
House of Representatives to Mr
McMahon (Lib., NSW), who had
asked, what action would be
taken to have it removed:
Mr Holt said that he had
sought, so far without success,
to get the text of the resolu
tion. So far ss he could . dis
cover,' it applied to only one
vessel now on the Australia-
America run — the Aorangl.
He was considering the mat
ter, and . its implication would
be carefully studied.
"We have reached levels of
absurdity when a trade union
can, on a matter of this kind
abrogate to itself functions and
decisions which are properly
the prerogative of Its Gov
ernment." he said.
