ALIEN INFLUX
A.N.A. Insists on Strict
Control
PRESIDENT'S SPEECH
(Prom Our Sprain! Representative)
SWAN I-IILL, Tuesday.— "We
should insist that the influx of
aliens into Australia should be
limited to two per cent, of our
annual gain- in /population each
year from within our Empire."
Special emphasis was laid upon the
need for watchfulness in this regard
In the address with which the presi
dent (Mr j. Green) opened tho 58th
annual conference of the Australian
Natives' Association hero today.
Dealing with migration, lie said
that tlic subject required dellcato and
scientific control. Allowing that
every child born in Australia last year
was of British descent, Australia's
gain in population was 903 per cent.
British, and 9-.V per cent. non-British,
and, of that 9. per cent. non-British,
6:1 per cent, was Southern Kuropcan.
The association, when placing this
matter before tlic Commonwealth Go
vernment, wus - told that there was
no danger of that 98 per cent. Bri
tish stock being -reduced. On the
basis of tho figures just given, how
ever, It wus only a matter of n short
while, and there would bo a con
siderable dilution of our British stock.
' "NO SI I1E-TK ACKING"
"Wo' arc riot going to be sidc-1
tracked by any statements that the
matter 'is well In lmnd. The figures
r have quoted disprove that," declared
Mr Greon.
. "If our gain in population last year
was 120,000 persons, the Common
wealth should fix the alien immigra
tion quota for this year at 2500.
"Wo havo tho power, under legis
lation for which this association was
primarily responsible, and if tho Go
vernment adopted this safety clause
it would have the whole-hearted sup
port of every true Australian.
"ICvory person who comes hero and
is idle is a charge oil the whole com
munity. Fven worse than that, lie
regards his fellow-countrymen who
are In employment with envious eyes.
"If many Australians are thrown
out of employment, while large num
bers of migrants aro entering the
country, they become embittered, anil
serious troublo may easily develop."
tkkacirero: to our own
Unfortunately, proceeded tho pre
sident, the greatest lack of confidence
L in the product of, our land was shown
toy.somo of our own people. Our own
institutions would not appoint Aus
tralians. cdiiculcd and developed hero,
because they were not considered
sufficiently qualified. That was an
act of treachery to the children of
today and a reflection on our well-
equipped educational institutions.
They were forced to leave the land
of their, birth to secure tho recogni
tion they wero refused at liomo.
Hmphasising tho need for main
taining the association's "ATado in
Australia" policy, Mr Green said that
the demand for luxuries was respon
sible chiefly for tho huge adverse trade
balance Of £70,000,000.
"A halt must bo called or we will
be committing national suicide," he
declared. "With' a' continuance of
such trade conditions, what shall wo
hand to our rising generations, a
country mortgaged almost to ' the
point of insolvency, CLiid yet a coun
try which should be absolutely self-
supporting and self-contained."
