CAPTAIN OF THE MAINE
Ship That Caused a War

NEW YORK, July 20.
Rear-Admiral Charles Dwight
Sigsbee, who was captain of the Uni
ted States battleship Maine when she
was blown up in the harbor at Ha-
vana, Cuba, on February 15, 1898, is
dead.
The sinking of the Maine was the
immediate cause of the Spanish-
American war of 1898. Tho battle
ship, which had been sent to Havana
on January 26 of that year, was
blown up in tho harbor on February
16. There wore 266 lives lost, most
ly of seamen.
After the war Captain Sigsbee was
advanced three grades In rank "for
extraordinary heroism displayed »n
the war with Spain, and on tho occa
sion of the wreck of tho Maine." He
was 78 yours o£ age, and he retired
in 1907.
