Free State Troops Use ;
Artillery

A real battle story from Cork re
cords the operations at Macroom,
where Irregulars occupied Btrongly-
fortifled mountain positions, and fired
on their opponents from' caves.
Three columns of Free. State troops,
using artillery, oxecuted a flanking
movement, and compressed the .scat
tered" Irregulars into an area of half
a mile. : From then on. fierco fighting
continued beforo the. Irregulars, after
having suffered heavy casualties, re
tired. , -
Some cscaood in specially con-
structed tunnels. When the first flank
ing column brought its artillery into
action, the Irregulars were seen re
moving their dead, in carts and other
vehicles.
Free State troops occupied Bal-
Hngear, and pushed on to -Bally-
vournoy, whero the people, who were In
a. pitiablo condition, woro subsisting
on scanty supplies of potatoes and
meal..

It is reported from Queenstown that '
owing to the improved conditions In -
the South, of Ireland, the ' destroyer
