HORSES ARE STILL
PAINTER'S THEME
Horses are again the chief subject, and the main interest,
of the paintings shown by Septimus Power in his annual exhi
bition at the Athenaeum Gallery.
This painter's virtuosity and
his command over his chosen
subject have made him a force
in painting here.
His picturesque style, how
ever, can easily become flam-
bouyant through sheer ease in
handling. In fact, some of his
work is slapdash. The clouds,
for example, in some of his
landscapes look like cumulus
Ice-cream.
But where he uses the talent
he has. some powerful work
results — as In the watercolors
of horses grouped under trees
(24 and 31), and in some oil
paintings showing forge scenes
and .horses hauling timber
VERA MORRISON
Vera Morrison's exhibition
opens at the Melbourne Book
Club Gallery at 3 p.m. to
morrow.
Her quiet, unhurried manner
is not primarily suited to out
door work, but is seen at its
best in the shadowed still lifes
and flower paintings.
Their dark backgrounds have
a moody depth into which the
fruit and flowers recede, carry
ing reflection with them Into a
dream.
WENDY WILDING
Mr John Knight will open an
exhibition of well-thrown but
highly-glazed pottery by Wendy
Wilding in Georges Gallery at
3 p.m. tomorrow.
It is not greatly inspired
work: but it is usually not fussy,
or pretentious. It is a contrast
to much of the commercial
junk we see everyday.
COMBINED SHOW
Some misty ballet scenes in
watercolor. and two or three
pastel sketches on dark paper
are the chief interest of a
combined exhibition 'by Mabel
Pye and Dorothy Moore. It will
be opened at 3 pm. tomorrow
by Mme. Kira Bousloff.— L.T.
