that the Danzig- Senate has given ah assurance that steps
are being" taken to guarantee the proper functioning of the
Polish cttgtoms in Danzig territory, including additional
police protection for Polish officials.

toms houses on the Danxig-East Prussia frontier.
CONCERN IN LONDON
The Herald Special Service
There is some concern in Lon-
kn - 'regarding the incidents at
Danzig, as a result of which Mr
Chamberlain, although he will
tint Edinburgh on Thursday, will re
us to London on Friday, and will
muin nearby throughout Whitsuntide
i case events take a turn similar to the
of Albania at Eastertide,
lie Chamberlain would have a much
hopelul view of the future if a
"coral settlement of the Danzig ques-
® could be achieved, but the situation
we U at present obscure,
lie Poles remain very calm, but it ts
that. the Nazis have used the dis-
Sjwjocs as a pretext to rush a con-
"table quantity of arms Into the ter-
ritory. This Is regarded as ominous,
but the real meaning is speculative.
The Germans may have created the
Incidents to test Polish reactions, al
though the thought of any real war
over Danzig would be most unpopular
in Italy and might strain the Axis.
It is doubted whether there Is a
deeply-laid German plot, but in the
absence of more precise information the
British Government ts watching the situ
ation closeley.
The only comment In official quarters
on the Italo-German pact, signed today,
was: "It does not alter the situation one
bit."
In contrast to three weeks ago, when
it would have been the main item of
news, the British newspapers today
"buried" it in inside pages, devoting
to it only a few lines with small head
ings.
