! MAGNITAS IS
FAVORED
I By ''Cardigan"
I Moderate performers do not
twin the CaulReld Cup. It is
i definitely a race for good horses,
j not the scrubbers of tho turf who
by lucky runs and lightweights
struggle to victory at the expense
of the heavily weighted division.
iTN fact a poor performer has not won
at Caulfield for a generation. Not
always has the proved galloper suc
ceeded as Denis Boy prior to his vic
tory in 1931 was e very "small potato,"
ana "Wynette and Whitticr had not won
rich races before their Cup success. The
Caulfield Cup for them was a stepping
stone to fame. .
On Saturday Magnitas may be in the
same position, as those good gallopers.
The Cup may be his first of many wins
t in gooa class company. Certainly ho
has won at Randwick— -his Final Han
dicap win at the Spring meeting was a
goocf effort— but the touch of class was
absent
1 Dr. Stewart McKay, author of many
books on the thoroughbred and a keen
student of racing, declares there is only
one way to select the winner of a big
handicap.
His method is to study the history
of the race and make deductions that
cuuse the winner to stand out like a
beacon light on a dark night.
Let us examine the history of the
Caulfield Cup.
Five year olds easily have the best
winning record. They have won on'
eighteen occasions, a good average con-j
sidering only 56 Caulfield Cups have!
been. run. '
Four year olds follow with 13 sue-1
cesses, six year olds with 11 wins, and
three years olds with 8, while the poor
old aged horses have only won on six
occasions.
So far the age theory Is in favor of
Magnitas who is a five year old. i
Weight carried by winners is a factor1
to be considered and should be examin
ed closely. Let us group the weigh ts
carried in 'three lots— from 6.7 to 7.7,
7.7 to 8.7, and 8.7 to 9.7.
Twenty-three winners have carried ;
6.7 to 7.7 inclusive. 20 between 7.7 to:
8 7. 12 between 8.7 to 9.7, while oldj
Amounls is the sole winner who car-l
ricd more than 9.7. However as there
is no runner beyond 9.7 engaged this:
year that does not matter.
You see on weights— according to the |
history of the race — Magnitas again,
works out quite well, as he has 7.7 to :
carry. ' 1
