A.F.A. LEAGUE
POLICY
Watchdog Role
PRESIDENT MAKES
POSITION CLEAR
Although the State Council of the
All-For-Australln League decided
yesterday to withdraw from its
association with the United Australia
Organisation, It has no intention of re
tiring from the political field. For the
present it will play tho part of a
"watch dog."
When the League was formed Its
objective was political activity of non
party character, and tho decision means
it Is merely observing this ideal. It re
serves the right to fight for whatever
cause promises to bo of most value to
the country.
Today the president (Mr Ernest Turn-
bull) defined the Intentions o( the
League.
STATE ATTITUDE
"Unless some vital matter crops up,"
he sold, "the League will take no part
in tho Stato elections. It maintains its
right to praise the Premier (Mr Hogan)
or any other member of the State Go
vernment for any action that it considers
merits praise.
"Tho League is by no means defunct.
By its decision, it is Simply conforming
with tho original ideal that prompted its
formation. We are not n party organisa
tion. The bulk of our members are
pooplo who had belonged to various
parties, but who Joined the League be
cause they Wanted to do something for
the country.
"Many proposals were submitted to us
before the Federal election in an en
deavor to induce us to nominate A.F.A
candidates. This we refused to do. be
cause it would have been inconsistent
with our stand.
"IF WE HAD LANG "
"If a critical position rises in State
Eolitlcs, we will leave it to the A.F.A.
ranches in the different districts to
exercise their own Judgment. While we
do not agree with oil Mr Hogan lias
done, wc have been unstinting in our
praise of his work at the conferences,
and also In our pralso of Mr Jones.
"No position that would cause us to
take sides has been created in Vlctorio.
If, for Instance, wo hod a Mr Lang here
wc would be very much in the thick of
a Stato campaign.
"The issues of repudiation and in
flation are not, at tho moment, involved
with Victorian affairs. In present cir
cumstances we will not intrude into a
State campaign. If the need arises, we
will."
