SUSPENDED OFFICTRS EXON
| ERATED
TROUBLE CAUSEO BY ILL-FEEL-
ING.
SYDNEY, June 20.
Investigations made by an officer ap-
pointed by the New South Wales
Ministry to report on the suspension
from duty of the town clerk of Canter-
bury (Mr. J. L. Sutton) und the engineer
(Mr. T. Raw), In consequence of an
adverse report on the municipal adminis-
tration by an auditor, have entirely
exonerated Messrs. Sutton and Raw,
who were accused of neglect of duty.
The Ministry has been advised that
there was no general neglect of duty by
the municipal officers which would Jus-
tify their suspension. It is recommend-
ed that the Canterbury Council. be
ordered to pay the officers' salaries for
the time of their suspension, and also
their legal expenses, which amount to
£560.
There Is much public Indignation
against the Canterbury Council since Its
officers were exonerated. A public meet-
ing of ratepayers has decided to peti-
tion the Ministry to dissolve the council.
It is contended that ill-feeling has been
the cause of the trouble.
