AVIATOR'S DEATH

LONDON, Thursday.
Consternation has been caused In
France by the death of the famous air
man, M. Pegroud, who was the most
popular man in France except General
Joffre.
Peeroud was coins off duty near Bel-
fort, at 10 a.m., when he heard an Avia-
Uk making for tho town, and he imme
diately flew up in pursuit. Tho Gorman
was flying a very heavy machine while
Pcgoud had a swift Monococquo. In an
unclouded sky the two machines circled
round each other.
Pegoud was the first to get to work.
Ho emntied his cartridcro belt without
effect, and then retired with a half
turn, in order to re-load his machine
gun. The German manceuvred skilful
ly, giving his man with the machine
gun a clear aim. There was a sudden
rattle of fire, then Pegoud's machine
quivered and swayed uneasily, nnd fell
to the ground.
There were no traces of his terrible
fall on Pegoud. A surgeon said that
he had been killed instantaneously with
a bullet, which severed the artery of the
heart.
The body has been taken to Belfort,
where tho funeral will be held on
Friday. '
