TROUBLE IN NANKING
Australian Arrested by
Chinese
Soldier Run Over by
Motor-car
Compensation Demanded
SHANGHAI, October 30.
A threat of trouble hangs over Nan-
king as the result of au incident involv-
ing Mr. A. G. Macalister, a Queens-
lander, who recently started out and
abandoned a search for the missing
"Times" correspondent (Mr. Riley). Mr.
Macalister was sojourning in Nanking,
' acting as honorary correspondent for a
local evening paper in regard to the
Nanking military situation. He was
driving in an automobile with Mr.
Tweedy, another Britisher, in the Brit-
ish concession, when he ran over and
injured a Chinese soldier. Macalister
and Tweedy were arrested, and a sum
of 2,600 dollars demanded as the sol-
dier's compensation. The car seixed
was the property of tho French Postal
Commissioner.
Macalister referred the matter to the
British Consul for settlement. Ho was
told by Ute Chinese that it was impos-
sible to wait, and unlesB he paid in
three days the military commander
would refuse to nccept responsibility
for the behaviour of his troops. Tho
British senior naval officer of the Yang-
tze flotilla is investigating the incident.
