BAYSWATER CRIME
STATEMENT BY STEWART.
ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING.
LONDON, March 2.
On the reappearance at the Maryle
bone Court to-day of the man Stewart,
who is charged with the murder at
Bayswater of Alfred Webb, who was
shot when he surprised a burglar In his
son's premises, the prosecutor read an
alleged statement signed by Stewart
to the effect that he first knocked at the
adjoining flat. The occupiers were at
home, so he broke into Webb's flat, and
was searching it when he heard a voice
say, "Run Cliff." He called out, "Hands
up," and, taking a small pistol from his
pocket, opened the door and dashed
out. He did not see anyone." On
reaching the top of the stairs he receiv-
ed a blow in the face, and fell and
struck his head on the banisters. He
was holding the revolver in his right
hand, and heard a report, and then a
gasp. He was flabbergasted, because
be did not see anyone. He scrambled
up and ran into the street, and heard
calls of "Stop that man." He continued
running, and discarded his pistol and a
few articles of stolen jewellery. He had
no Intention of shooting or harming
anyone, and was terrified next morning
on reading that Webb had been killed.
Stewart was remanded.
