ARSENIC ON AMERICAN APPLES. I
In spite of the publicity given last
season to the question of arsenic on ap-
ples, it was found that fruit was still
arriving from the United States at the
early part of this year, contaminated
with quantities of arsenic such as to
constitute in the opinion of medical of-
ficers here, a danger to the health of the
community. As you are aware, it was
reported last year that moro than a hun-
dredth of a grain of arsenic was, injuri
ous. yet apparently apples were arriving
here from that country In which as*
much as one-twentieth of a grain was
found, tlie varieties affected being chief-
ly Nowtowns and Jonathans. Last year
thousands of cases of apples which on
analysis had been found to contain dan-
gerous quantities of arsenical spray,
were returned to the United States. No
single case, however, has been found of
Australian or Tasmanian apples being
so contaminated, and the reputation of
our fruit has been undoubtedly enhanced
by its purity in this respect.
