WIRELESS SERVICE
Australia and Canada
Preliminary Test '
I MELBOURNE, October 3.
After many delays, chiefly owing to
difficulties experienced In erecting
Canadian aerials, a preliminary test of
the beam service between Australia and
Canada has been made, with a success-
ful result. The test consisted only of
tile - transmission of signals from
Canada, for the purpose of making final
adjustments to the Australian receiver.
The Australian transmitter for service
has been completed for some time, ana
successful local tests have been made
with It.
Unofficial tests of service will be com-
menced In about a week, to ascertain
th« daily period during which transmis-
sion will be possible. Following these
tests, Amalgamated Wireless of Aus
talla Ltd. will carry out tests to ensure
that the service will be capable of
handling the business anticipated by t!ie
company. If these tests prove success-
ful, the company will take over the ser-
vice from Mr. E. Drake Richmond, en-
gineer of the Marconi Company, who has
been in charge of the Australian sec-
tion. Providing that all tests prove
favourable, It is expected that the ser-
vice will be made available for public
use In about a month.
Owing to the fact that no provision
has been made for two routes of com-
munication, as In the beam service to
Great Britain, the number of hours
available dally for transmission to
Canada will be less than that now pos-
sible on the English service.
