POWER FOR CHANNEL 1
POLL TO BE TAKEN.
Sir John Evans, at the request of the
Kingborough Council, has been in con-
ference with Mr. Curtis, manager of the
Hydro-Electric Department, with a
view to getting an extension of the
hydro-electric supply from Woodbridge
to Gordon. An estimate and report
from Mr. Curtis was given to Sir John
Evans for submission to the council.
The report stated that from informa-
tion obtained there were eight persons
In Birch's Bay, and thence 75 addi-
tional consumers, making 83 for the
proposed line. Some of them lived a
considerable distance back from the
road, and the estimate only covers sup-
plying them a distance of 60ft. from
the road boundary. Any extensions be-
yond that distance would be for con-
sumers' account. The estimate pro-
vides for a nine-mile extension of a
single phase at 11,000 volts from Wood-
bridge, with the necessary low tension
distribution, house services, street
lamps, and tho necessary transformers.
The estimate is approximately:-Nine
miles of 11,000 volts, £l,800;..and seven
of low-tension distributor on the high
tension line poles, £420; two miles of
light on poles to bo erected In streets,
£220; 83 house services, £332; 10
street lamps, £30; six 5 K.W. trans-
formers, £390. Total, £3,192. Or say
£3,200. '
Annual charges on this basis will be:
-Interest, depreciation, and mainten-
ance, at 121 per cent., £400; estimated
power demand, 13 h.p. at £12, £180.
Total annual cost, £580.
Revenue.-83 consumers, at £5,
£415; domestic power, say, £25; 100
meters, at 6s., £30. Total, £110.
The balance of £110 would havo to
be raised by a rate, and a lighting rate
of 8d. in tile £1 would glvo the neces-
sary money. The revenue was esti-
mated very conservatively, and it ap-
peared that the proposal waa a satis-
factory one for the municipality to em-
bark on. A poll of the residents in the
area under the Kingborough Lighting
Act would have to be taken to obtain
the authority to borrow the 'necessary
capital. Contracts with consumers
would also want to bo finalised.
Councillor J. G. Charlton expressed
pleasure at the report, and said it was
very satisfactory, indeed, to find that
the work was not so expensive as at
first stated. There were some items in
the capital outlay suggested that could
be reduced. Street lights were- of little
or no value In small townships, and he
thought when the work was put in hand
it would be found possible to put the
lino down in eight milos and not nine.
The rato rroposed was the same as that
paid In other parts of the municipality,
and he moved,
That an area bo defined and a poll
taken at once.
Councillor W. II. Cripps seconded,
and, after discussion, tile motion was
agreed to unanimously.
