TRAMWAY SERVICES
Overtime Conditions
Clauses of the Award
¡ Referring last night to the statement
I published in "The Mercury" yesterday
with regard to municipal tram services,
the manager (Mr. S. H. Hancox) said
that the reference to the new award
providing for some employees being
guaranteed 192 hours over a four-weekly
period was not correct, so far as Hobart
was concerned. For the present, the
Hobart City Council was bound by the
award to continue to guarantee each
driver and conductor pay for eight
hours' work per day and 48 hours per
week.
Clause 33 of the new award, he said,
I read: "Clauses 4, 6, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 1C,
17, 21, 26, and 28 shall not apply to the
I cities of Hobart, Launceston, Ballarat,
Bendigo, or Geelong, but in such cities
the prevailing customs and conditions
of employment relating to the subject
matters of such clauses shall continue
until further award or order."
These clauses relate to probationary
staff, junior labour, continuous night
shifts, day and night shifts, rosters,
spread of hours, dally and weekly over-
time, 8tanding-by time, meal hours', pro-
motions, punishment, and call backs.
Judge Beeby, in the course of his
judgment, said that "if traffic men work
the same hours as workmen following
normal callings, their earnings, aug-
mented" as they are by overtime, would
be much lower. Then, again, the. con-
cession of normal working hours would
mean a great increase in staffs to meet
peak periods of traffic, much payment
for time not worked, and a ruinous in-
crease in ruuning costs."
NO MENTION BY COUNCIL.
NOTICE OF QUESTIONS.
No mention whatever was made "in
open Council at the meeting of the City
Council last evening with regard to the
decision of a meeting of the Hobart
branch of the Australian Tramway Em-
ployees' Association not to accept over-
time in the Hobart tramways service
unless ordered to do so in writing, but,
acting for Alderman W. M. McHugo,
who was unable to be present, Alder-
man R. R. Martin gave notice of the
following questions:
Will the Tramway Committee please
furnish the following return?
(1) Number of employees in Tramway
Department.
(2) Number of married returned mes
and date of appointment.
(3) Number of single returned men
and date of appointment.
(4) Number of married men not re-
turned soldiers and date of appoint-
ment.
(5) Number of single men not re
turned soldiers and date of appoint
ment.
(G) Amount paid for overtime during
last year and for the expired portion
of this year.
NO FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS.
Following on the request of the
tramway employees'1 that all orders foi
overtime should be given in writing
tho position yesterday remained un
changed, and the services wore carried
on without interruption.
PERTH SERVICE SUSPENDED.
UNION PRESIDENT DEPOSED.
PERTH, October 3.
While members of the Tramway
Union held a stop-work meeting to dis
cuss the internal disagreement in the
organisation, the public was deprived
of a tram service between 10.30 a.m
and 2 p.m. yesterday. At the meet
ing, which was of an uproarious nature
400 members attended, and a vote ol
no confidence in the committee of man
agemeut, except the secretary, was car
ried. The meeting also decided te
alter the constitution to provide for the
election of the secretary every twelvt
'months. The president of the uniot
was deposed, Mr. E. Pickering bein£
appointed temporary president. Th«
decision will not affect the present sec
rotary, as the remainder of his tern
(over 2J years) will have to expir«
before he will be eligible for re-election
Many who were present considérée
the proceedings irregular, as the meet
ing was not called to discuss amend
ments to the constitution, but to dea
with a motion of no confidence in th«
committee of management.
