BRIGHTON COUNCIL I
CHAMBERS
I
SUGGESTED REMOVAL. i
DIFFERENCE OF OPINION
At the November meeting of the I
Brighton Council, held at Pontville
Council Chambers yesterday, a petition, [
signed by 107 electors of tho Brighton
municipality, was road, praying that
consideration be given to the-advisabil
ity of transferring the headquarters ol' !
the municipality from Pontville to \
Bridgewater. The petitioners conslil- |
ered that the best interests of the ma-
jority of ratepayers would be better
served by the council's' offices being situ-
ated in that centre, where, on the weekly
sale days, they could transact their
business with the council at a great
saving in time and money.
In presenting the petition, Councillor
Tas. Piesse said the 107 people who had
signed the petition wero strongly in ta
vour of the chambers being removed to
Bridgewater, as it was In that centre
that the biggest number of ratepayers
assembled. He moved that a poll be
taken on the question.
Councillor T. J. Eddington said he was
not In favour of tho council chambers
being removed from their present posi-
tion.
Councillor C. Sibley said it was not a
fair thing for Councillor Piesse to pres-
ent the petition without having given
notice. Bagdad people treated the pe-
tition as a joke. >
The Warden (Councillor W. N. Mc-
shane) suggested that Councillor Piesse
withdraw his motion, and give notice to
move at the next meeting.
Councillor Piesse then gave notice to
move at the next meeting: That a poll
of the ratepayers be taken to decide the
matter.
The Warden was instructed to gather
all the information he'could concern-
ing the rents, otc, on the old and new
building, and report to" the next meet-
ing. '
On tho motion or. Councillor Sibley,
seconded by Councillor H. Pace, it was
decided that the Government be asked
to generally renovate the present cham-
bers, before Christmas.'
