GOVERNMENT WORKERS.
To the Editor.
Sir.--Yesterday, in the Legislative As
sembly M?r. Simons tabled a motion for
the appointment of a Select Committee
to inquire into the discharge of the State
Savings Bank manager, and during his
speech he said:-"It should be the func
tion of Parliament to make every effort
to ensure that no servant of the Govern
ment is ever unjustly visited with punish
ment, or made the innocent victim of
hardship." If it is good enough to ap
point a Select Committee to inquire
about a late bank manager, why not make
a few remarks about. the Public Service
Commissioner depriving three women
cleaners in Government employ of 1.
per hour or Gd. per day since October
I1 last year? One at least of these women
has nine children to keep. and the AT
bitration Court gave an award of Is. .d.
per hour. but the Public Service Com
missioner or the Industrial Agent of the
Government will only pay is. tid.-Tours,
etc.
Perth. Oct. 1. FRED WHITE.
[When the above statement was re
ferred to the Government Industrial
Commissioner (Mr. A. C. Mont) he
stated that the award, in his opinion, was
Is. Pd. an hour for casual half time
cleaners. The half time cleaners em
ployed by the Government were engaged
continuously throughout the year. There
fore, the payment of is. Gd. was justified.
If the matter were disputed, it could be
placed before the Public Service Appeal
