At the March meeting of the lasman
Municipal Council at Cantara on there

A. letter was recen ed from the Public
Works Department stating that £1 had
been granted on the £1 for ±.1 principle
for the extra culvert on the contract on
the road to Harold Clark s
A letter was received from the Tduca
tion Department objecting to the increase
of rent foi the Carnarvon school ard offer
ing to provide better equipment if the lent
was left as at piesent It was also
stated that if the higher rent was insisted
upon the department would have to con

sideration it was decided that the higher
rent of £15 per annum be adhered to

The Warden reported that re had
written to the Huon Channel and
Peninsula S S -Compan> in connection
with voxels calling at the Slopen Main
Jetty The company had rc.ilicd thit
they could not call at this jetty as it
would mean running at ii loss but that
they were still willing to call there when
there was sufficient cargo to justify it

out tnat the general rate would have to
be one shilling in the pound to enable
the debit to be reduced at all, -nd that
even then expenses would have to be
cut down Councillor Frost spoke in
favour of the general late being left at
nncpence, ind said that administrative
expenses would have to be cut down
Councillor Smith said that he vas quite
willing to suppo-t anything that would
cut down the -dniiniotrative expenses,
but that he did not see that any of the
suggestions offered v o-ld bo successful,
he moved lhat the council fix the
rates now and consider the reduction
of expenditure at the ne*t mcelin*; '
Councillor Locke seconded the motion,

Councillor Locke moved and Council
lor Smith seconded Tnat the following
rates and tax be levied for the Tasman
Municipality for the year ending on
December i0, 1925 and be due and pay
able at the council clerk s oflicc on the
first day of April, 1921, general rate

Frost moved, and Councillor free sec-
onded, as an amendment "That the gen-
eral rate be 9d in the pound, and that
administrative expenses be cut down "
The amendment was lost, and the mo
I tion was carried on the votes of Coun- .
cillors Quarrell, Plummer, Kerslake,
Smith, and Locke.
i Councillor Kerslake moved and Coun
I cillor Quarrell seconded: "That the
council clerk be the collector of rates."
This was carried.
The council clerk was instructed to in-
quire into the improvements at the ¡hos-
pital and obtain a cover note from the
Government Insurance Company for the
extra amount.
Councillor Kcrslnke tendered his re-
signation from the hospital committee
on account of the distance he had to
travel to the meetings. He suggested
Councillor Quarrell should bo appoint-
ed in his place. Councillor Free moved
and and it was carried: "That Council-
lor Kerslake's resignation be accepted
with regret, and that Councillor Quar-
rell be appointed in his place."
For the coming election of councillors,
Councillor Kerslake was appointed return-
ing officer for Carnarvon Ward, Councillor
Free for Nubeena Ward, and Councillor
Frost for Premaydena Ward; Councillor
Quarrell presiding officer at Taranna, Coun-
cillor {Smith at Highcroft, and Councillor
McKay' at Saltwater River. Tlip polling
places are to be: Town-hall. Carnarvon;
Public-hall,' Taranna; Public-ball. Salt-
water River; Public-hall, Koonya; Public
hall, Nubeena; and any suitable available
room itt Highcroft to be decided on by tile
presiding officer.
Nominations arc to be received for Car-
narvon Ward at Councillor Kerslake's re-
sidence; for Nubeena Ward at the Nu-
beena Post Office; and for Premaydena
Ward at Councillor Frost's residence.
Councillor Kerslake was authorised to
have three days work done cleaning up
culverts near XV. McGinnlss's. Councillor
Frost was authorised to have four or five
days work done at the swamp on the road
between Uarnetl's and Gwandalan.
The Secretary for Education wjote say-
ing that the council would have the right
to purchase the hospital buildings for £150
provided that they did so within twelve
months. It was decided that the War-
den write to the Director of Education and
point out that tho council had been pro-
mised the buildings on a 99 years' lease.
Councillor Gathercole was authorised to
employ two men and a team for four days
to repair the road on the Wedge Bay
marsh instead of one man and c team for
five davs as previously authorised.
The council's attention was drawn to the
bad state of the bridge between Carnarvon
and N. A. Blackwoods, on the Safety
Cove-road. The matter was left in the
hands of Councillors Kerslake and Gather-
cole lo have done.
Councillor Free was authorised to have
two men and a tetini for five days on the
Carnarvon-Nubeena road, in Nubeena
Ward.
Accounts to the value of £147 10s lOd
'were passed for payment, this bringing
the council's overdraft up to about £550.
