ALBUERA-STREET STATE-SCHOOL.
SUCCESSFUL FAIR.
Very gratifying results attended the
work of the committee of the Parents'
Association and teaching staff who ar
ranged the annual monster fair in con
nection with the Albuara-street State
school on Saturday, for some 1,500 people
were present, and the takings ran into
something like £300. It is hoped that
in future the work of the school will be
carried on in a broader sphere since it
is proposed to purchase a motion picture
outfit and a wireless telegraphic set, in
order that lessons may be brightened,
while many smaller things lay claim upon
the funds and the success of Saturday's
function demonstrated that the public and
parents were in sympathy with the move
ment. A festive scene presented itself at
the school. The quadrangle, as well as
the balconies and shelter-sheds were oc

and two large marquees erected by the
scholars, and a display of goods and flow

There were several side attractions in the
shape of a motion picture entertainment,
Aunt Sally, and so forth, all of which
attracted excellent business; while a ped

participated, was a striking feature of the
afternoon. The dresses of the young peo
ple, for the best of which some nine or ten
prizes were offered, showed a distinct
touch of originality, and were made by
their parents.
The arrangements for the fair were car
ried out by the joint secretaries (Messrs.
H. J. Read and C. Manning), who spared
no effort to ensure its success. Valuable
assistance was rendered by the teaching
staff and the Parents Association.
The fair was opened in the afternoon
bv Mr. W. H. Sheridan, M.H.A., who
spoke on behalf of the Minister for Edu
cation. (Hon. A. G. Ogilvie). Mr. G. V.
Brooks, the Director of Eucation, and
Mr. Crawford, secretary of the depart
ment, were present during the afternoon.
Other speakers were Mr. J. P. Piggott,
Mr. Duncomb, and Mr. H. J. Reed. In
the evening the fair continued, and
in addition to several forms of entertain
ment a programme of music was rendered
by the Derwent Concert Band. A dis
play of electric light, the wires for which
had been strung round the balconies and
verandahs, was most effective
