INTERESTING MINERAL DIS-
COVERIES.
COAL, SALT, AND EPSOM SALTS.
DISCOVERY NEAR BUCKLAND.
Mr A Mcintosh Reid Assistant
Government Geologist returned to Ho
bart on Fnd i\ from in inspection of
tho southern and eastern coalfield
which is being coined out bv the «io
logical Survey While there Mr RxiJ
examined a new find of coal on pi o
perty owned by Mr John French siti
ated about seven miles to the south
west of Butkland A branch mad
from the main East Co ist-road nias
within i mile of tho discovery flii
coal seam which is about 2ft thick
was exposed by a landslip which. oc.
ourred somo time ago Mr Reid con
siders the find a promising one, as the
coal is of good quahtv He has luid
out a plan of work with the obiect of
enabling tue extent of the seam to he
better ascertained, and a party of {ive
of Mr riencli s sons is now putting a
drive through the landslip for tnat
purpoce They are already in 60ft,
ind another 40ft of driving is expect
ed to reach the coal seam
Mr Reid will now visit tho Hastings
district to inspect the coal seams there
aboufcs after which he will examine the
oountrv at Mount Rex near Vvoca
and this will complete the work is far
as the southern and eastern distuots
oro concerned and by that time it is
expected that Mr P B Nye, of the
Geological Survey, who is engaged on
the central coal areas, will also have
completed his task
Not far distant from the BuckLind
coal find in interesting discovery of

Epsomite which having cathartc
qualities, is used medically received its
name from Epsom England where Ep

the boiling down of the mineral waters
of (he district These ?-alts were also
prepaied from cea water, but now the
aro obtained from mineral deposits like
that under notice Although Dpsom
ite is known to occur in small quanti
ties m manv parts of Australia includ
mg Dromedary Mountain, Upper LHKP
Rivet, Exton Chudleigh, and on the
West Coast in Tasmania, this is *he
first deposit of any magnitude that ha-,
been discovered in this State Sam
pies of both the salt and the Epsom
ite have beon brought to town by Mi
Reid, and aro being tested as to their
commercial value
A;part from its possible industrial im-
portance, too, this find is of geological
interest, as it gives the paleognphiral
position of the Trias-Jura sandstones
