Grim Relic
A few week, ago I was out looking
for some horses that were lost, and
was compelled to take shelter from
a heavy shower of rain in a little
old slab hut, where a few years ago
a man had committed suicide. On
looking round the hut, for curiosity's
sake, I found an old tobacco tin, and
inside the tin was a paper with the
following written on it:—
I have crossed the mountains rugged
I have tried to wear a smile.
But I never found that nugget
For to make it worth my while.
Dark days gave me full measure,
Bright gleams they seldom shone,
O, where will I find pleasure
Worn me for ever gone.
One year has gone to-morrow
Since all I had was sold;
My heart's weighed down with sorrow
All through the curse of gold.
To leave me where I'm lying
I'll have no grief or pain,
And when Father Time Is flying
--I may come back again.
