Fob some unaccountable reason " Vigi
lant V tips for the third and fourth days'
races at the A. J.O. Meeting have not
oome to hand when we went to press. The
result of the Hall arid Mitchell boxing
match ib Sydney was likewise missing.
Alfred Barratc, twenty-thtpe years
of age, and a well-known eteeplechaae
jockey in the West of England, committed
suicide on the 15tb of February, by taking
pruaaic acid. "The deceased, who wae a
member of tbe Royal College of Veteri
nary Surgeons, had for some time past
been in the aervioe of Mr. Heath, veteri
nary surgeon, of Exeter. About seven
teen months ago, whilst riding at the
Totnes Steeplechase Meeting, he was
thrown from hie horse, sua, pitching
on his head, eneteioed concuBeion of
tbe brain. For awhile his life was
deapaired of, but be eventually recovered
Sufficiently to resume his professional
jdotiee. The' injuries, however, left bad
effeots,'.for besides, producing occasional
deafness, he was at times very Tow spirited.
He. was found lying on tbe floor of his ;
master's surgbry, aud he died shortly
afterwards, as the postmortem examination
subsequently allowed, from the effects of
proesic arid. At the inquest subsequently
held (writes 'the London .Sporlunan) a
verflict of " Suicide whilst in a state of
temporary insanity" was returned.
