i railway carriage derailed.
fl A serious railway accident was
fl narrowly averted last night.
V heu the evening train 'for Portland
-reached the points opposite the end of
H tdic euglne-sbod, the two bind wheels of
a composite carriage immediately in
fl front of the van, left the rails and ran
fl aiongaide over the sleepers for about a,
fl hundred yards till within a few yards of
fl tbo bridge, when fortunately the train
fl vaa brought to a stand-still. Had it
fl gone a short distance further it would
fl inevitably have gone over the side of the
.fl bridge. At the points it could be seen
.fl quite distinctly where the wheels left the
B rnila, and in doing so cut the nuts clean
9 off the holts is the fishplate. From there
9 the tracks of the wheels could be follow-
fl ed over the sleepers up to the plan
.fl where the train stopped. As is nearly
fl always the case in such occurrences no
fl -oie knows 'what could have caused it.
'1 Fortunately, the accident happened in the
fl station yard wbere a number of men
fl «ere handy, as well as the necessary im-
fl elements to get the carriage on to the
fl rails again, and as soon as the passen-
fl cers and lutmu hod been removed from
.fl it, a gang of men set to work, and at
fl &45 a lusty cheer announced the foci
that the wheels were on the rails again.
The wheels,' which had -been damaged to
.1 eome extent, had to be sufficiently re-
paired to enable the to pull it
jfl out of the road, attar which the train,
fl which had been standing on the bridge
all the time, . was -run back into the
fl elation. A fresh carriage was attached :
fl to the train, - after which it. started
