FLEETWOOD-SMITH
Takes Five Wickets
'A FTER having been out of cricket for
nearly a year, L. O'B. Fleetwood-
Smith made his reappearance with the
Melbourne team in the District match
against North Melbourne on Saturday.
In his first over the left-hander took
two wickets, and he finished with five
for 58 off 11.5 overs. His length through
out was erratic, but this was only to be
expected in view of his long absence
from the crease. The main thing was
that he spun the ball as well as ever.
Fleetwood-Smith seems sure to be in
cluded in the Victorian team for the
Shield matches against Queensland and
New South Wales this month. It will
depend on his performances in these
games whether he can gain a place in
the Australian team for the fourth Test.
A feature of Saturday's District cricket
was the failure of the batsmen. Wickets
were still damp after the week's rain
and bowlers reaped a harvest.
After North Melbourne had been dis
missed for 131, Melbourne lost six for
68. Two of the State's leading batsmen,
in Rigg (10 > and Darling (20), went
cheaply. Both fell to Deveny, the young
North Melbourne fast bowler, who took
four for 37.
Another fine bowling performance was
by Banns. of Fitzroy, whose spinners
gained him seven wickets for 55.
Tiie only century-maker of the day
was Williams (Richmond), who carried
his bat for 129. a fine effort.
Scores in the matches, which will be
completed this week end, are; —
South Melbourne, 155, v. Fitzroy, three
for 37.
North Melbourne, 131, v. Melbourne,
six for 68.

rsn.
