Some excellent sport was provided for
patrons of the Goodwood Cup and Victoria
Stakes, on September 3 and 4, The even js
were run off under the auspices of the V:o-
toria Coursing Ciub. Entries in bath events
were satisfactory. The Cup attracted 24 d gs,
which included several of the be.t perfrrmers
of the season. In respect to the Victoria
Stakes there was a proviso which limi ed the
competition to dogs which had never won mora
than L10 net in any stake. Owners responded
liberally, and the stipulated number of 32
dogs could have been easily exceeded.
From a courser's point of view the meeting
was a thorough success. Financially, how
ever, the result was disappointing. It was
thought that Fleet Week Would help to in
crease the. attendance, and that some of the
American visiters would pay a visit to the
PlumptoD. Apparently, however, none of the
Americans were lovers of coursing, as not one
put in an appearance.
The proceedings opened with the first round
of the Goodwood Cup. The weather condi
tions on the first day were unfavorable, and
a strong head wind was responsible for fe
death of a- larger percentage of bares than
usual. Some very good trials were witnessed,
and Trusty; Major, Vida Goldsmith,' Fid ells,
Invergordah and Improved asserted themselves 1
ln..a decisive manner. Narelle ran a bye, tier
opponent, the 1907 Derby winner, Great-
jtbrought . being drawn." Some' gpod courses
were eeenj.jn the second round, and the per-,
iforrnanceof Invergordon made him a pro-
jdou'nccd favorite tor tbe Cup. In the Victoria
