AUSTRALIAN JOURNALISM.
How
many
Australians
know
anything
of
the
first
journalistic
efforts in
Australia?
George
Howe
is the
man
responsible
for
our
first efforts in this direction.
He came to
N.S.W.
as a convict with a seven years' sentence.
On arrival
he became
official printer
to the
Governor.
His ability was recognised and he persuaded
Gov
ernor King
to print all general orders in a newspaper
and the
first
one was issued on
May
5th..
1803.
This was the "Sydney Gazette and
N.S.W.
Advertiser."
It was supposed to be issued weekly,
but it came out when and how it could be managed.
Sometimes
it consisted
of
4 pages
foolscap
and frequently as only
pages
demy.
General
subscriptions for the paper were difficult to collect
which made things very difficult for the Editor, and
he became
financially
embarrassed more than once.
Before he obtained
his release he was
entitled
to
his rations, but, when he received his pardon, he
was
no
longer
able
to
obtain
this.
However,
Governor Macquarie put him on his feet, and
he
became quite prosperous for a while and died
of
dropsy in
1821.
