Meeting.
Though the sky was dull and overcast on I
Saturday, the weather remained fine, and the
Grand National Steeplechase meeting of the I
Victoria Amveur Turf Club was brought to a
tuooescful conclusion. The prospect of an io- J
tereating aft- moon's sport attraobed a large j
attendance, and among those who pat- i
roD:Bd the course was his Excellency
the Governor and mite. The racieg was
inaugurated with the SaplingSakes, which
retul r d in a victory for the favourite Sun-
phad-, a'tw a close finish with Epicnrem.

ful in the Selling Race, and the Grand
National Steeplechase, which was full of in
cident, was won' by Gamer-who, with Con
tingent, was the only horse to complete the j
course without a mi«bp. A large field saddled
up for the Balaclava Stake, which was appro
priated by the Tasmanian - bred mare
Pocahontas, who went out a firm favourite,
Tomlin, the rider of Honey Bee, was sus
pended for a month, for disobedience at the

Camerme qu'okly retired, and Honey Joee, in j
company with Gardenia, led -along the side, j
the former holding a distinct advantage before
leachibg tbe home turn, where Maroney, j
Pocahontas, and Quintin Matsep were close j
handy. The latter ran through to the front
turning into tbe straight, and looked all over a
winner until Pocahontas put in a vigorous
challenge, and running truer than Quintin
Ma'sep, the mare won cleverly by a neck,
Honey Bee three lengths off third, followed by
St. Louie. Time, limn. 35see.
