SOCIETY MEETINGS.
The weekly meeting of the members
of St. John’s Y.M.C. was held in the
club room on Wednesday night last, the
chair being occupied by the president
(Mr A. D. M'Leiau) There was a. good
attendance of members, also a large num
ber of lady visitors. The business of
the evening was quickly gone, over, and
the.syllabus item, “Impromptu speeches/’
was taken. The questions handed in
; brought forth lively discussion,- nob only

Tnis brought a very pleasant evening to
a close.
The monthly meeting of the Ballarat
Literary Association was held under the
guidance of Mr H. Trevanon, vice-presid

with, considerable interest was taken in
|the riotico of motion by St. John’s dele
jgate, "That no debater represent more
then one society.” .Though the mover
strenuously contended for his view of
tho subject/ in an able address, the vote
of the delegates was not in favor of the
existing ciroumstanees being altered.
In consequence of one of the societies
being compelled to withdraw from the
competition, notwithstanding earnest ef
fort to keep afloat/ it was decided to re
arrange the programme, and tho officers

and it was firelly decided to adjourn the
matter until-the next meeting, and the
