Air-Raid Trenches
For Dandenong
AT a conference convened by the
Premier last week, the Dande-
nong Municipality agreed to co
operate with the Commonwealth
and provide slit-trench protection
for approximately 1,000 people in
the most populous portions of the
shire—Dandenong, Spring Vale
and Noble Park.
Most of these trenches will be in
the vicinity of shopping centres —in
the streets and on vacant allotments —
and will provide a refuge for citizens
who might be caught away from their
own homes.
On Saturday last the District War-
den (Mr N. A. Taylor), the shire sec-
retary, the engineer and military ex-
perts inspected the town and selected
suitable sites for some of the tren-
ches.
The council’s biggest trouble will
be to get labor to dig the trenches,
and Cr J. A. Loller, the shire presi-
dent, has issued an appeal for volun-
teers to come forward and help with
this urgent work.
