GLEN WAVERLEY
Mr. and Mrs. David Scammell, of
“Glen Valley,” Waverley road, Mount
Waverley, celebrated the golden an
niversary of their wedding, at their
home, on Monday, February 11. Owing
to. the redent death of Mr. David Scam
mell, Jnr., only relations were pre
sent, which included their wives and
children, many grand-chndren, . and
two great grand-children. Mrs. Scam
mell was the second daughter of the]
late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Jeanes, who;
were pioneers of Mount Waver ley, or
Black Flat, as the district was origin
ally known, and she has lived there
all her life. The couple were married
at St. Alpine’s Church, Oakleigli, by
the late Rev. Fr. O’Callaghan. Mr.
and Mrs. Scammell are foundation
members of St; Leonard’s Church,
Glen Waverley, and both enjoy com
paratively good health, and they have
been the recipients of many con
gratulations.
On Australia Day, about 150 em
ployees of the Government Printing
Office, with their families and friends,
held their annual picnic at Glen
Waverley recreation reserve. Cricket,
tennis, hiking, and a social in' the
Mechanics’ Institute-in the evening
made the outing most memorable.
Visitors contended that with a' better
train service many more would have
been present.
St. Leonard’s Church Picnic Com
mittee met last Saturday, when the
secretary (Mrs-. F. Ryland) presented
the balance sheet, which disclosed a
satisfactory surplus. The president
(Mr. B. Henry) said the recent picnic
had proved one of the most success
ful held under the auspices of the
church, 'which augurs well for the
future.
A meeting of Notting Hill Tennis
Club was held at the residence of
Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Flaclc, on January
31. Owing to pressure of business,
Miss Enid Jeffrey tendered her re
signation as secretary, and Mr. Geo.
Forster was appointed. Mr. Flacky
Cr. Forster and others eulogised Miss
Jeffrey’s efforts, the club haying made
rapid progress during her regime.
Miss Jeffrey acknowledged the com
pliments, and said she will retain her
interest in the club. A musical pro
gramme followed, to which members
and friends. rendered items. Song,
Mr. James Hall; duet, Misses Dulcie
and Winifred Horner; song, Mr. Geo.
Forster; recitation, Mr. Geo. Hall;
violin solo, Mr. Richard Barker; song,
Miss Barbara Hall. There was also a
short session of community singing.
A vote of thanks was accorded Mr.
and Mrs. Flack, after which a dainty
supper was served.
The sixth annual picnic of Notting
Hill school was. held at Aspendale last
Thursday, and proved most success
ful. Included in the many visitors
were the head teacher (Mr. J. Keddie),
Miss Keddie, and the school staff. Mr.
Keddie presided at luncheon in the
Aspendale Public Hall, and expressed
his pleasure at seeing so* many pre
sent. He briefly outlined the history
of the school, which is makng rapid
progress, and he hoped all would have
an enjoyable time. Cr. W. M. Forster,
chairman of the School Committee,
congratulated parents upon their
hearty co-operation. The school now
has a flourishing Young Farmers’
Club, also a well-kept horticultural
plot. All regretted the absence,
through indisposition, of Mr. W. J.
Horner. It was pleasant to see their
friend, Mr. Ben. Hall, .with them
again, after his long illness (Cheers).
The picnicers enjoyed themselves in
diverse ways, but late in the after
noon rain set in, and a varied pro
gramme of school songs, interspersed
with vocal and pianoforte items, was
greatly appreciated. Cr. Forster and
Messrs. J. West, Joe Tageil and F.
Bailey kindly piovided transport.
